ロバート・W・ブキャナン (Robert W. Buchanan, 1841-1901)

スコットランドの詩人、小説家、批評家。生まれはイングランド中部のスタフォードシャー (Staffordsire)。父親がもともとスコットランドのエア (Ayr) 生まれであったことからグラスゴーに移り、そこで高校、大学教育を受ける。1860年にロンドンに出て、文人として名を上げるが、ブキャナンの 名を今日まで有名にしている一番の要因は、彼がラファエル前派に対して行った攻撃であろう。特に1871年にContemporary Review 誌 に寄せた ‘The Fleshly School of Poetry’ において、野卑で官能的、そしてあまりに個人的であると批判を受けたダンテ・ゲイブリエル・ロセッティ (Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1828-82) は、このことが原因で自殺未遂をしたとも言われている。悪意に満ちた攻撃文として悪名高い批評ではあるが、そこにはブキャナンの詩に対す る基本的な姿勢がよく表れている。
