W・M・サッカレー (W. M. Thackeray, 1811-63)


インドのカルカッタに生まれ、5歳でイングランドに移り住む。サッカレーと言えば The Book of Snobs (1847) や Vanity Fair (1848) といった風刺精神溢れる散文作品がよく知られているが、彼がケンブリッジ大学トリニティ・カレッジをわずか一年で退学した理由は、散文ではなく詩作に耽り 勉学を怠ったためと言われている。幼くして父親を亡くし、結婚してからは妻が発狂し、苦難の多い生涯を送ったと言われるサッカレーであるが、彼の詩作品に は、彼が人生に必要であると考えたユーモアが満ち溢れている。 (M. M.)
