トマス・フッド (Thomas Hood, 1799-1845)



1799年5月、ロンドン生まれ。London Magazine (1821-3), The Gem (1829), Comic Annual (1830), New Monthly Magazine (1841-3), Hood's Magazine (1843) の編集に携わり、 自身もユーモア作品や詩篇を投稿する。当時のセンセーショナルな話題をユーモアたっぷりの風刺や パロディに仕立てた作品は大変な人気を博し、一流のユーモア作家としての名を知らしめた。 "The Dream of Eugene Aram, the Murder" (1829) は、友人を殺したかどで絞首刑に 処せられた言語学者Eugene Aram (1704-59) の伝記を基にした作品であり、 後にブルワ・リットン (Bulwer-Lytton, 1803-73) も同様のテーマでEugene Aram (1832) を執筆した。 病床で書かれたという二作品 "The Song of Shirt" (1844), "The Bridge of Sighs" (1844) は、 貧しい工場労働者や売春婦の自殺の問題を扱った作品でフッドの名前を後世に残すアンソロジー・ピースである。 (Y.
