English author and journalist. He began to contribute to various magazines and papers in 1873, and is known as the first editor of Literature. For the Saturday Review he wrote weekly verses on the subjects of the day. He also produced a vast work, Social England, from 1893 to 1898, which proves his critical insight into literature. The wit and humour characteristic of his prose are also found in his ballad, “After Dilettante Concetti”, which is an excellent parody of D. G. Rossetti’s “Sister Helen” (?1851) and “A Superscription” (1869).    (M. M.)
