1797年2月、ダブリンに生まれる。小説家、作詞家、音楽家、画家など多方面で活躍した才気溢れる芸術肌。Songs and Ballads (1839) には、彼のアイルランドの歌やバラッドが集められ、中でも “Rory O’More”、”The Four-leaves Shamrock” は有名である。”Rory O’More” は後に Rory O’More (1837) という小説に仕立て直され、さらにはロンドンの劇場で上演されるに至る。主人公 Handy Andy を中心に19世紀半ばのアイルランドの生活を軽妙な調子で描いた Handy Andy, an Irish Tale (1842) は、彼の名を後世に残した小説。 (Y. Born in Dublin, February 1797. He was a versatile artist, not only as a talented novelist and songwriter but also as a musician and a popular painter. He produced a number of Irish songs collected and published in Songs and Ballads (1839), among which “Rory O’More”, “The Four-leaves Shamrock” and others are quite well known. Later, “Rory O’More” reappeared as Rory O’More (1837) in novel form, and then was dramatized for the Adelphi Theatre in London. His best-known novel, Handy Andy, an Irish Tale (1842) sketches Irish life in the mid-19th century through its hero, Handy Andy.    (Y. Y.)
