詩人 J〜L 1740年〜1799年 翻訳作品 詩人 J〜Lスコットランドの詩人、長老派教会牧師。南東部の旧ミドロージアン (Midlothian) 州に生まれる。情熱的な説教で人気を博していたが、彼の書いた悲劇 Runnamede が1783年にエディンバラで上演されたことから信者の不興を買い、父親ゆずりの大酒癖のせいもあって、86年に聖職を去り、ロンドンに出て文筆活動に専念した。
1770年にマイケル・ブルース (Michael Bruce, 1746-67) の詩集 Poems on Several Occasions を編集し、これには有名な “Ode to the Cuckoo” も収録されていたが、1781年に自らの詩集 Poems を出版した際にこの “Ode” を自分の作品として含めたために、ブルースの友人たちが疑義を唱えるという物議を醸した。
ウィリアム・ハミルトン (William Hamilton) のバラッド詩 “The Braes of Yarrow” が伝承バラッド “The Braes o Yarrow” (Child 214) を元歌としているのに対して、紛れもなくローガン自身の作品である美しいバラッド詩 “The Braes of Yarrow” (1781) は伝承バラッド “Rare Willie Drowned in Yarrow, or, the Water o Gamrie” (Child 215) を元歌としている。結婚に反対する母親の呪いによって増水した川に息子が溺れ死ぬという元歌のモチーフはローガンにあってはまったく姿を消し、恋 人を失った語り手の悲しみだけがクローズアップされている。詩人のねらいは、全48行中44行を占めるモノローグを通して語り手の悲しみを伝えることに あった。事件を語る伝承バラッドの迫力が消え、バラッド詩が心理的・主観的になっていった点でハミルトンと共通する。 (M. Scottish poet and sermon-writer, born in the county of Midlothian as the son of a small farmer. In 1770 Logan edited Poems on Several Occasions by Michael Bruce (1746-67) with a few pieces by other writers, in which the “Ode to the Cuckoo”, one of the most popular poems in the language, appeared. In 1781 he published his own Poems, including the “Ode” as his own, though Bruce’s friends strongly doubted Logan’s authorship.
Logan’s beautiful “The Braes of Yarrow” (1781), with the same title as William Hamilton’s poem (1723), imitates a traditional ballad, “Rare Willie Drowned in Yarrow, or, the Water o Gamrie” (Child 215), while the latter was based upon “The Braes o Yarrow” (Child 214). Logan’s literary ballad, however, is essentially different from the tradition in that the heroine’s psychological monologue occupies most of the 48 lines of the piece. (M. Y.)
