詩人 D〜F 1800年〜1859年アイルランド、モナハン (Monaghan) 出身の詩人、愛国主義者、ジャーナリスト、政治家。1842年、トマス・デイヴィス (Thomas Osborne Davis)、ジョン・ディロン (John Blake Dillon) とともに週間新聞 The Nation を発足させる。３人とも、青年アイルランド党のメンバーであり、この新聞は毎週10,000部以上を売り上げ、党の考えを広く民衆に広めていった。この新聞に収められたバラッドや詩は、ダフィーの編集により The Spirit of the Nation として1843年に第1部が、44年に第2部が出版され、45年には楽譜付きで増版、改訂された。さらに、同年には Ballad Poetry of Ireland を編集・出版する。
1852 年に New Loss の議員になるが、55年にはオーストラリアに移住し、ヴィクトリア州の第8代州首相 (1871-72) になる。また、73年にナイトの爵位を受け ている。80年、フランスへ引退し、ロンドンのアイルランド文学会の初代会長となる。 (N. M.)
Born in Co. Monaghan, Ireland, in 1816. An Irish nationalist, journalist, and politician, and an Australian statesman and author. He was one of the founders of The Nation, a weekly Irish nationalist newspaper first issued in 1842, the two others being Thomas Osborne Davis and John Blake Dillon. The three of them were leading members of a nationalist group called Young Ireland. The newspaper spread the views of Young Ireland widely, selling more than 10,000 copies per issue. Following the phenomenal success, Duffy collected the poems and ballads originally published in The Nation and issued part one of The Spirit of the Nation in 1843 and part two in 1844. An enlarged edition appeared in 1845 with music settings added. Duffy also edited The Ballad Poetry of Ireland (1845).
He became MP for New Ross in 1852, but emigrated to Australia in 1855, where he became the 8th Premier of Victoria (1871 to 72). Knighted in 1873, he retired to France in 1880, and became the first president of the Irish Literary Society in London. (N. M.)
