William Bell Scott

(Y. Born in Edinburgh, September 1811. He was a poet and painter who had a strong connection with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, as a close friend of D. G. Rossetti (1828-82) and Swinburne (1837-1909). His best collection of poems and ballads, Poems by William Bell Scott (1875) with his own illustrations, included some anthology pieces such as “The Witch’s Ballad”. He often took for his paintings the subject of local history and ballads, and a series of pictures, depicting the history of Northumberland and the border, and those in the subject of the ballad “Chevy Chase”, are kept at the Wallington Hall, a country house and garden currently owned by the National Trust.    (Y.
