ジャーナリスト、芸術批評家。1847年から53年までスコットランド中部の町バノックバーン (Bannockburn) にて教鞭を執る。その後、Stirling Observer やニューカースル=アポン=タイン (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) の Northern Daily Express で編集の仕事をし、1861年には Edinburgh Daily Review に移り、その論説委員長を務める (1862-68)。 (N. M.)

Journalist and art critic, born in 1820 (or 1823). He worked as a schoolmaster at Bannockburn during 1847-53. Thereafter he became an editor, first of the Stirling Observer and then of the Northern Daily Express (Newcastle-upon-Tyne), and moved to the Edinburgh Daily Review in 1861, of which he was a principal leading writer from 1862 until his death in 1868.    (N.
