詩人 M〜O 1800年〜1859年小説家、詩人、宗教家。スコットランドのアバディーンシャ、ハントリー (Huntly, Aberdeenshire) に生まれる。アバディーン大学で学位取得後、ロンドンの組合教会のハイベリー神学校で学び、牧師になる。その後牧師の職を辞し、文壇に入る。彼のファンタジー小説は、神話、聖書、中世騎士物語、ダンテといった伝統の上に成り立つものであり、子供だけでなく大人のファンも多い。 また、代表作Phantastes (1856)、The Princess and the Goblin (1872)、Lilith (1895) といった作品が、その後J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973) や C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) らに与えた影響は大きい。存命中には同時代の文人たちと幅広い交流があり、その中にはテニスン (Alfred Tennyson, 1809-92)、ディケンズ (Charles Dickens, 1812-70)、ラスキン (John Ruskin, 1819-1900)、サッカレー (William Makepeace Thackeray, 1811-63)、ロングフェロー (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1807-82)、ホイットマン (Walt Whitman, 1819-92) らがいた。Lewis Carroll (1832-98) の Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland (1865) 出版を熱烈に後押ししたのも彼であったという。 (M. Born in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. After he took his degree at the University of Aberdeen, he went to London and studied at Highbury College for the Congregational ministry. In 1853 he left the ministerial work and began writing. His fantasy novels, such as Phantastes (1856), The Princess and the Goblin (1872), Lilith (1895), greatly influenced many authors, including J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973) and C. S. Lewis (1898-1963). He was also friends with many literary figures, such as Alfred Tennyson (1809-92), Charles Dickens (1812-70), John Ruskin (1819-1900), William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-63), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-82) and Walt Whitman (1819-92). Lewis Carroll (1832-98) submitted Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland (1865) for publication after his advice. (M. M.)
