詩人 V〜X 1740年〜1799年アイルランドの詩人。1791年12月14日にキルデア (Kildare) で生まれた。アイルランドの民主主義運動家ウルフ・トーン (Wolfe Tone, 1763-98) の親戚である。1799年父親に先立たれた一家はイングランドへ移住する。ウルフは高校までイングランドで教育を受けた後、ダブリンのトリニティ・カレッ ジ (Trinity College) に入学する。卒業後、サウジー (Robert Southey) が Edinburgh Annual Register に書いたサー・ジョン・ムーア (Sir John Moore, 1761-1809) の戦死について読み、心を動かされ、挽歌 “The Burial of Sir John Moore” を書いた。この詩は1817年に匿名で出版された。最初は関心を示されなかったこの作品は、原作者が誰かという論議とバイロン (George Gordon Byron) の絶賛により19世紀中頃にかけて広く読まれることとなった。 (M. Irish poet, born in Kildare, Ireland 14 December 1791. He is related to Wolfe Tone (1763-98) who headed the Irish democracy movement. His father died in 1799, and therefore his bereaved family went to London. He was educated in England for about 10 years and matriculated at Trinity College, Dublin in 1809.
After graduation, he read an account which Southey wrote about Sir John Moore’s death in the Edinburgh Annual Register. He was impressed by the account, and created his own elegiac ode, “The Burial of Sir John Moore”, published anonymously in 1817. The controversy as to the original author and Byron’s praise aroused people’s interest in this poem, which was read widely in the middle of the 19th century. (M. I.)
