1775年2月、ロンドンに生まれる。兄 Horace とともに Rejected Address (1812) や Horace in London (1813) など、同時代詩人や古代ローマの詩人ホラティウスのオード群をパロディにした詩集を世に出して名声を得る。Rejected Address では、兄 Horace がバイロン (George Gordon Byron, 1788-1824)、トマス・ムーア (Thomas Moore, 1779-1852)、スコット (Sir Walter Scott, 1771-1832) などを扱い、ジェイムズはワーズワス (William Wordsworth, 1770-1850)、サウジー (Robert Southey, 1774-1843)、コールリッジ (S. T. Coleridge, 1772-1834) などのパロディを担当した。その他にも、当時の雑誌類に数多くの滑稽詩や散文を載せている。 (Y. Y.)

English poet, born in London, February 1775. He is counted as one of the best English parodists with his brother Horace Smith (1779-1849). Rejected Address (1812) is a joint work of the most widely popular parodies of contemporary poets ever published in England. They divided the task between them, James taking William Wordsworth (1770-1850), Robert Southey (1774-1843), and S. T. Coleridge (1772-1834), while George Gordon Byron (1788-1824), Thomas Moore (1779-1852), and Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) were assigned to his brother. They produced many other comic verses and prose for the various periodicals of those days.    (Y. Y.)
