詩人 S〜U 1740年〜1799年イングランドの詩人。中部ダービーシャー (Derbyshire) の村イーヤム (Eyam) に生まれる。10歳以降生涯のほとんどを、ジョンソン (Samuel Johnson, 1709-84) の生誕地でもあるスタフォードシャー (Staffordshire) のリッチフィールド (Lichfield) で過ごし、‘Swan of Lichfield’ の愛称で呼ばれることも多い。早くから詩を書き始め、Elegy on Captain Cook (1780)、Llangollen Vale, with Other Poems (1796) その他の作品があるが、スコット (Sir Walter Scott) が彼女の詩集３巻を1810年に回想録を添えて編集・出版した。書簡集 Letters of Anna Seward 1784-1807 も1811年に６巻本で出版された。スィーワードのバラッド “Rich Auld Willie’s Farewell” はスコットの Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-03) に収録されている。 (M. English poet, born in Eyam, Derbyshire. Often called the ‘Swan of Lichfield’, where she lived from the age of ten, and passed nearly all her life, she began to write poetry at an early age. She published Elegy on Captain Cook (1780), Llangollen Vale, with Other Poems (1796), and other volumes. Sir Walter Scott edited her Poetical Works in three volumes, with a memoir (Edinburgh, 1810). Letters of Anna Seward 1784-1807 was published in six volumes (Edinburgh, 1811). Seward’s ballad “Rich Auld Willie’s Farewell” was included in Scott’s Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-03). (M.
