詩人 M〜O 1740年〜1799年スコットランドの詩人。貧しい陸軍大尉の息子として、スコットランド南東部の旧州ミ ドロジアン (Midlothian) のロスリン (Roslin) 近郊に生まれる。1760年14歳の時に会計事務所の事務員として働きに出、やがて西インド諸島に送られて、1780年から86年の間は秘書官補佐として海軍旗艦に乗船した。帰国後文筆業に転じ、様々な政治パンフレットを書いたり小 説や詩も出版したが、今日では “My Luve’s in Germanie” や “My Boy Tammy” や “Come under my Plaidie” などの歌の作者としてもっともよく知られている。1818年、エディンバラで亡くなる。 (M. Scottish poet, born near Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland. Son of a poor army captain, MacNeill went to work as a counting-house clerk in 1760 at the age of fourteen. Soon, he was sent to the West Indies, and served as an assistant secretary on board a navy flagship (1780-86). After he returned to Scotland, he wrote various political pamphlets, two novels, and several poems, but is best known for his songs, such as “My Luve’s in Germanie”, “My Boy Tammy”, and “Come under my Plaidie”. He died in Edinburgh in 1818. (M. Y.)
