詩人 A〜C 1800年〜1859年イングランドの小説家、詩人。中部スタフォードシャー (Staffordshire) 州ストーク・オン・トレント (Stoke-on-Trent) で生ま れ、ニューカースル・アンダー・ライム (Newcastle-under-Lyme) で育つ。1839年、ミューロック一家はロンドンに移り住む。文筆業で生きてゆく決心をしたダイナは、子供向けの物語から出発して、やがてヴィクトリア 朝時代を代表する女流作家となった。1864年に、マクミラン出版社の共同経 営者であったジョージ・リリー・クレーク (George Lillie Craik) と結婚する。
1852年出版の『アリス・レアモント』(Alice Learmont) はスコットランドの伝承バラッド『うたびとトマス』(“Thomas Rymer”)に想を得た物語で、妖精の国に連れ去られた伝説のうたびとトマスの子孫であるアリスが赤子の時に妖精にさらわれるが、最後は母親の強い愛とうたびとトマスの霊によって救い出されるという話である。小説の代表作としては『紳士ジョン・ハリファックス』(John Halifax, Gentleman, 1856) ほか、子供向けの代表作として『小妖精ブラウニーの冒険』(The Adventures of a Brownie, 1872) や『びっこの王子とマントの物語』(The Little Lame Prince and His Travelling Cloak, 1875) など、文字通り多作な作家であった。1881年に『詩集』(Collected Poems) が出版される。(M. English novelist and poet, born at Stoke-on-Trent, and brought up in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. The family moved to London in 1839. Dinah began with fiction for children, and was ultimately regarded as one of the major women novelists of her day. In 1864 she married George Lillie Craik, a partner with Alexander Macmillan in the publishing house of Macmillan & Company.
Alice Learmont (1852), inspired by the Scottish ballad, “Thomas Rymer”, describes how Alice, a descendant of the legendary Thomas who was seduced by the Queen of Elfland, is stolen from her cradle by the elves and grows up in their country. She is finally released from her thraldom by her mother’s determined love and by the spirit of Thomas Rymer himself. Other works include John Halifax, Gentlemen (1856), The Adventures of a Brownie (1872), The Little Lame Prince and His Travelling Cloak (1875), and Collected Poems (1881). (M. Y.)
