スコットランドの詩人。1809年7月、グラスゴーに生まれる。アバディーン大学では、カリキュラムの変更など大学改革を精力的に行い、また、ギリシャ語教授として着任したエディンバラ大学では、ケルト研究を制度化するために尽力し、1882年に開講するに至った。Faust (1834) の翻訳はカーライル (Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881) の賞賛を得たという。その他の出版物には Lays and Legends of Ancient Greece (1857)、Lays of the Highlands and Islands (1872)、Life of Robert Burns (1887)、Scottish Song (1889) などがある。 (Y. Scottish classical scholar, born in Glasgow. He made great effort to reform the university curriculum at Aberdeen; then, when he became a professor of Greek at Edinburgh, he endeavoured to institute a Celtic chair in 1882. His translation of Faust (1834) won the praise of Carlyle. His other publications are: Lays and Legends of Ancient Greece (1857), Lays of the Highlands and Islands (1872), Life of Robert Burns (1887), Scottish Song (1889), etc.  (Y. Y.)
