1825年4月、アイルランドのキルケニー (Kilkenny) 生まれの小説家。「アイルランドのスコット」と称されるように、彼はアイルランドの農民の生活を丹念に描く小説群で人気を博した。題材は、古くから土地に 伝わる民間伝承から、同時代のカトリック解放に至るまでのアイルランドの利権回復運動までを幅広く扱っている。

 

アイルランドの民間伝承を基にしたThe Celts’ Paradise (1821) などの詩も書いたが、弟 Michael Banim (1796-1874) との共作であるTales of the O’Hara Family (1825, 26, 27) により主に後世に名を残した。The Nowlans (1833)、The Boyne Water (1836) などの小説は、このシリーズから後に独立して出版されたものである。 (Y. Y.)

Irish poet and novelist, born in Kilkenny, Ireland, April 1825. Often called “the Scott of Ireland”, Banim describes Irish peasant life in history, from folktales down to contemporary subjects such as their struggle for Catholic emancipation.

 

He wrote poetry such as The Celts’ Paradise (1821) based on Irish folklore, but he is better known as a novelist who wrote a series of joint novels with his brother, Michael Banim (1796-1874), Tales of the O’Hara Family (1825, 26, 27). This was a highly successful series, from which his later novels such as The Nowlans (1833) and The Boyne Water (1836) were composed.     (Y. Y.)
