イングランドの詩人。サフォーク (Suffolk) 州オールドバラ (Aldeburgh) に生まれる。1780年にロンドンに出て、エドマンド・バーク (Edmund Burke) の知遇と援助で、書物と読書をめぐるポープ (Alexander Pope) 風の詩 The Library (1781) を出版する。1783年出版の英雄詩体二行連句 (heroic couplet) の詩 The Village によって詩人としての名声を獲得した。“Sir Eustace Grey” (1807) では物語詩人としての才能を発揮し、1812年には21篇の物語詩を集めた Tales in Verse を出版した。クラブは、人間の狂気、幻覚、激情などを感傷を排除した伝承バラッド風のタッチで描くことに巧みであった。　(M. English poet, born in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. In 1780 Crabbe went to London, where he published The Library (1781) with the help of Edmund Burke. In 1783 he published The Village, a poem in heroic couplets which brought him a reputation as a poet. “Sir Eustace Grey” (1807) showed his gift as a narrative poet, followed by Tales in Verse (1812). His poetry in the manner of the traditional ballad is always unsentimental in its depiction of madness, hallucination, and uncontrolled passions.    (M. Y.)
