アイルランド詩人。1846年以降税関吏として働いた後、1863年にイングランドに移住し、カーライル (Thomas Carlyle)、D・G・ロセッティ (D. G. Rossetti) やテニスン (Alfred Tennyson) らと親交を結ぶ。1870年から79年まで文芸誌 Fraser’s Magazine の編集者として活躍した。1850年に出版された最初の詩集 Poems には有名な “The Fairies” が収められている。自ら伝承バラッドを編集した The Ballad Book (1864) のほか、自身のバラッド詩を収めた Songs, Ballads, and Stories (1877) がある。アリンガムの詩は素朴で、明快で、繊細な詩的表現に富んでいると評価されている。　(M. Irish poet. After working as a customs officer, Allingham settled in England in 1863. He cultivated friendships with Thomas Carlyle, D. G. Rossetti, and Alfred Tennyson. From 1870 to 74 he was sub-editor of Fraser’s Magazine, a Tory literary journal of high standing, and acted as its able editor until 1879. His first volume, Poems (1850) contains his best-known work “The Fairies”. Besides The Ballad Book (1864), a collection of traditional ballads edited by Allingham, most of his own literary ballads are included in Songs, Ballads, and Stories (1877). At its best Allingham’s poetry is simple, clear, and full of delicate artistic expressions.     (M. Y.)
