スコットランド南西部の旧州カークーブリーシア (Kirkcudbrightshire、現在の Dumfries and Galloway 独立自治体の一部) の小村 Borgue に生まれる。農村で行商人を生業としていた頃、自ら作った歌をうたい、”Wandering Wull” という呼称で親しまれていた。また、バラッドや歌、地元の文化や好古物を愛した彼は、”Bard of Galloway” とも称される。”Aiken Drum” の名で現在も人気のアンソロジーピース “The Brownie of Blednoch” は、彼の土着の文化や方言への感受性が結晶化した名作である。 (Y. Born in August 1782 in Borgue, a village of Kirkcudbrightshire, a part of today’s Dumfries and Galloway. He was widely known and loved as “Wandering Wull” when he was a travelling packman in the rural areas of south-west Scotland, where he would sing songs of his own composition. He loved ballads, songs, and local antiquities, which brought him the nickname, the “Bard of Galloway”. His ballad “The Brownie of Blednoch”, an anthology piece popularly known as “Aiken Drum”, is the product of his sensibility towards local culture and language.    (Y. Y.)
