イングランドの詩人。1780年9月、レスターシア、コーツバック (Cotesbach) に生まれる。サー・ウォルター・スコット (Sir Walter Scott) との親密な関係で知られ、それはスコットが Marmion (1808) のカントⅡで彼の素晴らしさに言及していることにも明らかである。スコット編纂の Minstrelsy (1802-3) には、マリオットのバラッド詩が収録された。また、多くの賛美歌を残しており、中でも “Thou Whose Almighty Word” は人口に膾炙されて、いくつもの言語に翻訳された。　(Y. Y.)

English poet and clergyman, born in Cotesbach, Leicestershire, September 1780. Marriott was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He wrote several hymns, of which “Thou Whose Almighty Word” is best known, having been translated into several languages.

 

Scott addressed him as an intimate friend in the second canto of Marmion (1808), alluding to Marriott’s store of classic and Gothic lore, to his poetic talk, and to his skill at the harp. Scott also included Marriott’s literary ballads in his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-3).    (Y. Y.)
