Journalist and art critic, born in 1820 (or 1823). He worked as a schoolmaster at Bannockburn during 1847-53. Thereafter he became an editor, first of the Stirling Observer and then of the Northern Daily Express (Newcastle-upon-Tyne), and moved to the Edinburgh Daily Review in 1861, of which he was a principal leading writer from 1862 until his death in 1868.
