スコットランドの詩人。1814年3月、パース (Perth) に生まれる。Morning Chronicle、Glasgow Argus、London Illustrated News、The Times などの雑誌や新聞でジャーナリストとして活躍するが、時折、詩や歌の執筆にも手を染めていた。その中でも、Henry Russell (1812-1900) の旋律と一緒に発表された “The Good Time Coming”、”Cheer Boys, Cheer!” はたいへんな売り上げを誇ったという。彼の作品の多くは、Voices from the Crowd (1846)、Ballads and Lyrics (1855)、Poetical Works of Charles Mackay (1876) などの詩集に収められている。また、Dictionary of Lowland Scotch (1888) の編者としても名を残している。 (Y. Born in Perth, March 1814. He engaged in journalism, first at the Morning Chronicle, and then at the Glasgow Argus, the London Illustrated News, The Times and other periodicals. He also wrote poems and songs from time to time, among which “The Good Time Coming” and “Cheer Boys, Cheer!” (music by Henry Russell) were the best sellers. Most of his poems and songs are collected and published in Voices from the Crowd (1846), Ballads and Lyrics (1855), and Poetical Works of Charles Mackay (1876). He is also remembered for his Dictionary of Lowland Scotch (1888).    (Y. Y.)
