イングランドの詩人、小説家。ロンドンの南西部チェルシー (Chelsea) に生まれる。頭文字の L. E. L. の名で知られる。1820年代に、William Jerdan (1782-1869) 編集の週刊誌 Literary Gazette に寄稿を始め、後には自ら編集に参加した。最初の詩集 The Fate of Adelaide は 1820年に出版された。憂いとロマンチックな情趣にあふれたランドンの作品は、当時の文学的嗜好にマッチして人気を博した。

 

ランドンは、エリザベス・バ レット・ブラウニング (Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806-61) やクリスティーナ・ジョージーナ・ロセッティ (Christina Georgina Rossetti, 1830-94) ら女性作家たちの道を開いた先人として尊敬された。ブラウニングは “L. E. L.’s Last Question” (1839)、ロセッティは “L. E. L” (The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems, 1866) という讃歌を残している。 (M. Y.)

English poet and novelist, born in Chelsea, London, and better known by her initials L.E.L. In the 1820s Landon began her contributions to the weekly Literary Gazette edited by William Jerdan (1782-1869). For some time L. E. L. was joint editor of the Literary Gazette. Her first volume of poetry appeared in 1820 under the title, The Fate of Adelaide. The gentle melancholy and romantic sentiment in her writings suited the taste of the period.

 

Landon was admired by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-61), who wrote “L. E. L.’s Last Question” (1839) in homage, and Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-94), who published a tribute poem entitled “L. E. L” in her 1866 volume, The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems. Landon was respected as a woman instrumental in forging the way for other female writers.    (M. Y.)
