トマス・ティッケル (Thomas Tickell, 1685-1740)

1685年、イングランド北部カンバーランド (Cumberland) 州ブライドカーク (Bridekirk) に生まれ、 オックスフォード大学クィーンズ・カレッジに学ぶ。1715年に『イリヤード』(Iliad ) の第1巻を翻訳。 長年にわたるジョゼフ・アディソン (Joseph Addison) の友人であり、彼の死に際して、有名な哀歌 "To the Earl of Warwick, on the death of Mr. Addison" (1721) を書いた。

伝 承バラッド "Fair Margaret and Sweet William" (Child 74) を元歌とするティッケルの感傷的な バラッド詩"Lucy and Colin"はヴィンセント・ボーン (Vincent Bourne, 1695-1747; ウエストミンスター校の校長でラテン詩作者) によってラテン語に訳された。この詩をReliques of Ancient English Poetry に収録したパースィ (Thomas Percy) は、 "one of the most beautiful ballads in our own or any other language" (Reliques 第 3巻) と称え、 ジョージ・セインツベリー (George Saintsbury, 1845-1933; 文芸評論家・歴史家) は "Any single copy of verses [does not] deserve so much credit for setting the eighteenth century back on the road of true romantic poetry by an easy path, suited to its own tastes and powers."
