Charles MacKay (1814-89
Born in Perth, March 1814. He engaged in journalism, first at the Morning Chronicle, and then at the Glasgow Argus, theLondon Illustrated News, the Times and other periodicals. He also wrote poems and songs from time to time, among which “The Good Time Coming” and “Cheer Boys, Cheer!” (music by Henry Russell) were the best sellers. Most of his poems and songs are collected and published in Voices from the Crowd (1846), Ballads and Lyrics (1855), and Poetical Works of Charles Mackay (1876). He is also remembered for his Dictionary of Lowland Scotch (1888). (Y. Y.)
