George MacDonald (1824-1905)

Born in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. After he took his degree at the University of Aberdeen, he went to London and studied at Highbury College for the Congregational ministry. In 1853 he left the ministerial work and began writing. His fantasy novels, such as Phantastes (1856), The Princess and the Goblin (1872), Lilith (1895), greatly influenced many authors, including J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973) and C. S. Lewis (1898-1963). He was also friends with many literary figures, such as Alfred Tennyson (1809-92), Charles Dickens (1812-70), John Ruskin (1819-1900), William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-63), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-82) and Walt Whitman (1819-92). Lewis Carroll (1832-98) submitted Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland (1865) for publication after his advice. (M. M.)
