Anna Seward (1747-1809)



English poet, born in Eyam, Derbyshire. Often called the ‘Swan of Lichfield’, where she lived from the age of ten, and passed nearly all her life, she began to write poetry at an early age. She published Elegy on Captain Cook (1780), Llangollen Vale, with Other Poems (1796), and other volumes. Sir Walter Scott edited her Poetical Works in three volumes, with a memoir (Edinburgh, 1810). Letters of Anna Seward 1784-1807 was published in six volumes (Edinburgh, 1811). Seward’s ballad “Rich Auld Willie’s Farewell” was included in Scott’s Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-03). (M.
